The Walks

Many of the locations which inspired the writings of the Brontë sisters are in open moorland, some distance from the village of Haworth and inaccessible by road. The most famous are the Brontë Waterfall and Wuthering Heights.

L
ess well known are Ponden Kirk ('Peniston Crag' in Wuthering Heights) and, further afield, Wycoller Hall ('Ferndean Manor' in Jane Eyre).

The routes describe here feature the Waterfall and Wuthering Heights. For other destinations, start and end points please contact us (see BOOKINGS AND CONTACT INFORMATION).

You will be escorted by a guide with more than fifteen years' walk leadership experience. Information regarding the locations, landscape and literary background will be offered. There will be ample opportunities for photographs and, weather permitting, refreshment stops.

"We set off, not intending to go far; but though wild and cloudy it was fine in the morning; when we got about half-a-mile on the moors, Arthur suggested the idea of the waterfall"

Charlotte Brontë, November 29th 1854.

THE ROUTES

Waterfall plus Top Withens and return: 8 miles (13 kilometres), up to 4 hours.
Waterfall only and return: 5 miles (8 kilometres), up to 2.5 hours.
Times include all stops.

We start from the steps at the front of Haworth Parish church (St. Michael & All Angels Church, at the top of Main Street: see map). Passing the crowded graveyard, we soon reach open country. Penistone Hill Country Park offers views of the Waterfall valley and the distant moorland. The valley continues to the bleak and lonely location of Top Withens. We return by one of several ways to Haworth village.

The choice of return route will be dependent on time and weather conditions. Please note that such routes may not follow the waymarked trails.

Shorter and alternative routes (with different start and end points) can also be arranged. See BOOKINGS AND CONTACT INFORMATION.
